Writing & Creativity
Alan Sepinwall is an American television critic and writer noted for episode recaps, newspaper columns, and coauthoring TV (The Book).
Biography
Alan Sepinwall (born October 19, 1973) is an American television reviewer and writer. He began writing about television with reviews of NYPD Blue while attending the University of Pennsylvania, which led to his job at The Star-Ledger. He spent 14 years as a columnist at The Star-Ledger until leaving the newspaper in 2010 to work for the entertainment news website HitFix, then wrote for Uproxx for two years. From 2018 to 2025 he was the chief TV critic for Rolling Stone and he now publishes a newsletter on the Ghost platform called What's Alan Watching?.
Sepinwall has conducted notable coverage and interviews, including the sole interview David Chase granted immediately after The Sopranos ended in 2007. In 2009 he openly urged NBC to renew Chuck, an action Ben Silverman later sarcastically credited for the show's revival. Slate said Sepinwall "changed the nature of television criticism" and called him the "acknowledged king of the form." He cohosted the Firewall & Iceberg podcast at HitFix with Dan Fienberg until October 2015 and hosted TV Avalanche at Uproxx with Brian Grubb.
