Bill Browder
Finance & Money
Bill Browder is an American-born British financier whose shareholder activism in Russia led to a campaign for accountability after Sergei Magnitsky’s death.
Biography
Bill Browder is an American-born British financier and political activist. He is the CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management, the investment adviser to the Hermitage Fund, formerly the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia. His investment approach centered on shareholder rights activism, challenging practices at major Russian companies including Gazprom and Surgutneftegaz. In 2005, Russian authorities refused him entry and declared him a national security threat.
Following raids on Hermitage’s Moscow offices and its law firm in 2007, Browder asked tax specialist Sergei Magnitsky to investigate. Magnitsky uncovered the fraudulent transfer of Hermitage holding companies, which were subsequently used to obtain a fraudulent tax refund. After Magnitsky was arrested and died in prison, Browder campaigned for legislation targeting Russian human rights violators. His lobbying supported the Magnitsky Act, signed into United States law in 2012.
