Biography
Bill Gates is an American businessman and philanthropist born in Seattle in 1955. He developed an interest in computing at Lakeside School, where he met Paul Allen. After enrolling at Harvard University in 1973, he left in 1975 to co-found Microsoft with Allen. Gates led the company as CEO for 25 years, later serving as chief software architect and technology adviser. He stepped down as chairman in 2014 and left the board in 2020.
Gates gradually reduced his Microsoft responsibilities to focus on philanthropy. He and Melinda French Gates co-chaired the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2000 until 2024, supporting work in health, education, and poverty alleviation. His philanthropic efforts have included combating tuberculosis, malaria, and polio. Following French Gates's departure, the organization became the Gates Foundation, with Gates as sole chair. In 2010, he and Warren Buffett founded the Giving Pledge, encouraging billionaires to commit at least half their wealth to philanthropy.
