Biography
Charles Eisenstein (born 1967) is an American public speaker, author, and activist. His books include The Ascent of Humanity, Sacred Economics, and The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible. His work addresses the history of human civilization, economics, spirituality, and the ecology movement, and emphasizes themes such as anti-consumerism, interdependence, and the influence of myth and narrative on culture.
Eisenstein argues that global culture is immersed in a destructive “story of separation” and promotes an alternative “story of interbeing.” As an activist he has been involved in the Occupy and New Economy movements and has promoted eco-villages, permaculture, local currencies, gift economies, economic degrowth, and universal basic income. He served as a senior advisor for Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s 2024 presidential campaign.

Sacred Economics
Sacred Economics traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, argues that the money system has driven alienation, competition, scarcity, and endless growth, and explores New Economics ideas—such as negative-interest and local currencies, resource-based economics, gift economies, and commons restoration—while addressing personal dimensions like right livelihood.
