Biography

H. Gilbert Welch is an American academic physician and cancer researcher. He worked as an internist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont, and served as a professor of medicine at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice.

In September 2018, Welch stepped down from Dartmouth College following a twenty-month research misconduct investigation. The institutional inquiry concluded that he had engaged in plagiarism.

Drawing on twenty-five years of medical practice and research, Welch has investigated the outcomes of screenings and preventative measures for disease, examining how shifting diagnostic thresholds turn healthy people into patients.
