John Warner served as a United States senator from Virginia from 1979 to 2009 and was a member of the Republican Party. He previously served as U.S. secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974, chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee (1999–2001 and 2003–2007) and the Senate Rules Committee (1995–1999). Open Library describes him as a longtime writing teacher and credits him as the author of More Than Words (2025), which argues that generative AI threatens traditional student essays and urges educators to rethink writing instruction. The book presents writing as both thinking and feeling and frames AI as an opportunity to reconsider how we work with words.

More Than Words
More Than Words argues that generative AI programs like ChatGPT can undermine the student essay because such assignments do not require students to do the real work of writing.
