Biography
Jonathan Safran Foer (born February 21, 1977) is an American novelist known for Everything Is Illuminated (2002), Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2005), and Here I Am (2016). He is also the author of non-fiction books Eating Animals (2009) and We Are the Weather: Saving the Planet Begins at Breakfast (2019). He teaches creative writing at New York University.
In Eating Animals Foer describes oscillating between omnivore and vegetarian during his teenage and college years and recounts how the prospect of fatherhood made dietary questions urgent. His quest led him to visit factory farms at night, to dissect the emotional ingredients of meals from his childhood, and to probe primal instincts about right and wrong. The book synthesizes philosophy, literature, science, memoir and his own detective work to examine the fictions that justify our eating habits and the stories he argues are now needed.
