Education & Learning

Richard Dawkins is a British evolutionary biologist and science communicator whose nonfiction books explain evolution, natural selection, and the gene-centred view of life.

Biography

Richard Dawkins is a British evolutionary biologist, zoologist, science communicator, and author born in 1941. He is an emeritus fellow of New College, Oxford. From 1995 to 2008, he served as the first Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science.

His books explore evolutionary theory for a general readership. In The Selfish Gene, he presented the gene-centred view of evolution and coined the word meme. The Blind Watchmaker explains how natural selection and random variation produce complexity, while Climbing Mount Improbable examines the gradual evolution of complex adaptations. He regards The Extended Phenotype as his major contribution to biology.

Dawkins also writes about atheism and science more broadly. He published The God Delusion and founded the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science in 2006. His other work includes science essays, a children's book, and two volumes of memoirs.
