Education & Learning
Steven H. Strogatz is an American mathematician and author whose work spans nonlinear systems, synchronization, applied mathematics, and public understanding of mathematics.
Biography
Steven Henry Strogatz is an American mathematician and author born on August 13, 1959. He holds the Susan and Barton Winokur distinguished professorship for the public understanding of science and mathematics at Cornell University. His research includes nonlinear systems, synchronization in dynamical systems, mathematical biology, and complex network theory.
With Duncan Watts, Strogatz developed the Watts–Strogatz model, which explains how nodes in small-world networks can have relatively few degrees of separation. He co-hosts Quanta Magazine’s The Joy of Why podcast and previously hosted The Joy of x. His books include Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, Sync, The Joy of x, The Calculus of Friendship, and Infinite Powers.

Infinite Powers
Infinite Powers explains how calculus uses infinity to break real-world problems into simpler parts and combine their answers into solutions. It traces the subject’s development from ancient Greece to the discovery of gravitational waves, exploring its applications in science, technology, and medicine.
