Biography
Tara Westover, born September 27, 1986, is an American memoirist, essayist and historian. Raised in a survivalist Mormon family in the mountains of Idaho, she entered college at 17 without having received formal education. Her educational journey eventually led her to complete a PhD program in history at Cambridge University.
Her 2018 memoir, Educated, explores that journey and the tension between her desire to learn and her relationship with her father's world. It debuted at number one on The New York Times bestseller list and was a finalist for several national literary awards. The New York Times included it among its ten best books of 2018. In 2019, Time named Westover one of its 100 most influential people.
